TECHNOLOGYTIMELINE

  • 1885 --- The first artificial heart-lung apparatus was built and used by M. von Frey and M. Gruber in Leipzig, Germany.

 

  • 1895 ---  C. Jacobj from Germany talks about a complex organ perfusion apparatus that uses donated lungs in order to exchange gases.

  • 1927 --- H. Necheles in Beijing creates the first "sandwich" artificial kidney that uses a membrane that includes calves' peritoneal membrane and dialyzed dogs.

 

  • 1942 -- Willem Johan ''Pim' Kolff develops a rotating drum kidney from aluminum scrapped from various materials, such as a German fighter place and a car water pump in a City Hospital in Kampen.

 

  • 1956 -- Dr. Kolff creates one of the first heart-lung contraptions.

 

  • 1957 -- In Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Kolff and Dr. Tetsuzo Akusto collaborated to create a real artificial heart by animal implants in which a test subject (dog) had survived for about 90 minutes.

 

  • 1960 -- In Portland, Oregon, Albert Starr was the first to successfully conduct an intracardiac prosthetic valve operation.

 

  • 1962 -- Joseph Murray from boston successfully transplanted a kidney in unrelated humans.

 

  • 1963 -- Paul Winchell gets first patent for an artificial heart. Dr. Henry Heimlich helped Winchell, who afterwards develops the Heimlich maneuver to save victims from choking. Later, Winchell hands over his patent rights to Dr. Kolff at the University of Utah.

2000's
  • 2004 -- The CardioWest is approved by FDA on October 15, and becomes the first and only FDA approved Total Artificial Heart. This TAH is approved for use as a bridge to transplant in cardiac transplant-eligible candidates at risk of death from both ventricular failure.

 

  • 2010 -- The first TAH patient in Europe is sent home from the University hospital of Nantes in France after using the Freedom® portable driver on May 28th, and a few days later, his transplant is deemed successful.

 

  • 2012 -- The United State’s FDA approves a Humanitarian Use Device (HUD) designation for the TAH, giving permission for the device to be used for needs such as destination therapy as well as its already approved bridge to transplant on March 2nd.

 

  • 2013 -- On January 15th, another HUD is approved by the FDA for the 50cc Total Artificial Heart to be used for destination therapy in those who cannot receive a heart transplant.

 

  • 2014 -- SynCardia Systems, Inc. received the CE mark on April 17th, which is a mandatory mark for conformity for certain products in Europe, for the Syncardia temporary Total Artificial Heart with SynHallâ„¢ valves, giving the company access to the last piece needed for heart manufacturing.
